Meet the Local Artist #5 The Sculptural Explosion of Juan Luis Potocsi

Exploding with love, joy or anger is something that defines us as humans and is a characteristic that Juan Luis He takes as his own for his sculptural technique in which he exploits materials and transforms them into a form of expression.

An example of this is his piece "The Fish Man," which was inspired by his past as a swimmer and uses a material similar to volcanic rock to represent himself as a being with scale rods and fins formed from pieces of windows.

This same destructive creation is what the sculptor imparts to the assistants of Dreamers Sculpture Workshop Those who manage to create a sculpture in a single session in which the “master” encourages the creative technique of his assistants and sympathizes with what they want to say in a piece.

And it's interesting to see how what one carries inside is reflected in their creations. There are people who make the smallest of sculptures and spend hours and hours on minute details, while others choose to go for large pieces and spend their time squashing and adding exuberant elements.

Creating characters, building bases, modeling, welding, and creating light and shadow are just processes that give birth or darkness to these pieces, which attendees can choose to take home or leave in the workshop.

It is worth mentioning that the sculptor recently opened his gallery in the famous La Aurora Factory which does so much to exhibit the work of local artists and a place where Juan Luis, beyond showing his pieces, curates so that all the elements there are in dialogue.

The 40% blacksmith and 60% sculptor is a big fan of reusing materials used in construction and melting them into a single piece to create the Potocsi, which is how the author calls his creative detonation.

Creating ambitious pieces that play between beauty and the grotesque is what defines him for the moment, like the 5-meter-long head he created from which a tree sprouts. Observing details like plants emerging from the cracks of old, humble dwellings is a great source of inspiration for the artist.

That's why we invite everyone to join his workshop before the artist leaves for Barcelona to teach for a while. It's essential to absorb his knowledge and become the sculptors of our own destinies.
