Holy Week San Miguel 2025
thumb-6-1024x1024

This profound period of reflection in which good foundations of Christianity are established is a perfect moment to be part of the traditions that have such a strong impact on the population of Saint Michael and that cause such a stir by offering fervent prayer to Our Lord with devotion, as well as symbolic acts where the sufferings that Jesus went through to reach the Cross are recreated, as well as his glorious Resurrection.

We're diluting such events day by day so our readers can join in the Holy Week in San Miguel. We also recommend wearing comfortable shoes, since you can expect to be standing for at least a couple of hours during the processions. We also recommend staying hydrated and using sunscreen to protect yourself from the harsh rays of the sun.

Holy Wednesday The procession will honor the Lord of Wonders at the morning Mass, and then at five o'clock the Via Crucis will begin from the Oratory to the Calvary of Our Lady of Solitude. Her image was created in the 17th century, and that of the Virgin of Sorrows with her typical silk garments and pearl tears. At dusk, the "Arrest" will be performed at the Holy School and the Temple of San Juan de Dios.

Holy Thursday The Seven Temples are visited, and the day begins with the "Washing" (Lavatorio) so that the images are ready for the 3 p.m. Mass. In the past, Christs from indigenous communities arrived carried on platforms and in procession, led by the Lord of the Conquest and accompanied by the sound of the Aposentillo (a type of shawm and small drum), which can still be heard today thanks to the family of Don Inés Granados.

Good Friday The sentence of Pontius Pilate is recreated and the procession of an authentic thorn of Jesus Christ is used to carry out “The Holy Encounter” at 12 noon, where Jesus raises his head upon meeting La Dolorosa, causing a great impact among the parishioners.
In the past, the priest Luis Felipe Neri used to recreate the three falls of Jesus Christ in a procession coming from Atotonilco, and at night, condolences are offered to the Virgin.

SATURDAY OF HOLY DAY It is when a silent Via Crucis is currently performed, led by the Virgin of Solitude with only women company without music and at each stop a young woman recites for her a poem written by Father Alfaro.
Around 8:00 a.m., the Easter Vigil will take place in the Temple of San Francisco, as well as in the Temple of San Juan de Dios, in the Parish Church, and in the Temple of the Oratory.

EASTER SUNDAY It is when the most solemn mass will be celebrated in the Parish and with the burning of Judas in the Main Garden and will also mark the grand return of the Christs to their villages where they will be welcomed with flower arches, fireworks, traditional dance and joyful music.
