LOCAL SOUNDTRACK 20: 25 Years of PILASECA

By: Fernanda Morales

Hello again! Time has flown by and without further ado we come to interview number 20 of Local Soundtrack, a series of conversations with artists who bring life and sound to the streets of San Miguel de Allende. This interview is special because we spoke with Paco Rivera, a member of Pilaseca, an iconic band that has been around for 25 years.

The members are originally from Mexico City, but it was in 1999 that fate brought them together and they formed a band in San Miguel de Allende, looking for artistic inspiration to create original music. The Mamma Mia Restaurant was the first place to open its door for them to play their music every weekend and thus, San Miguel became a music laboratory for them. Even José Luna, the owner of Mamma Mia, ended up becoming the band's executive producer to create their first albums.

Over time, opportunities arose at festivals and events in different parts of the country, involving them in an unforgettable musical journey. Today, the band is made up of Ariel Torres on drums, Mauricio Valdés on bass, Paco Rivera on vocals, Armando Servín on trumpet and Uriel Orozco on keyboards.

Each member has contributed their influences and essence to shape Pilaseca.

“I really like funk and R&B, while “Pawis” loves new wave, 80s rock; on the other hand, Omar and Ariel are more into rock, the trumpet player likes Latin rhythms more and the keyboard player likes electronic music, indie…”

Throughout his musical career, Pilaseca has released several albums with original music. It is worth noting that the most recent one has a great production behind it, as it was in charge of Thom Ruso, an American producer who has been nominated for the Grammy Awards on 14 occasions, and has also worked with artists such as Michael Jackson and Prince.

Paco told us that they are currently working on a new album that will have many surprises and will be distributed in a very innovative way: on biodegradable USB flash drives.

In her 25-year career, Pilaseca has experienced great moments such as her participation in “Vive Latino”, the “Tajín Festival” for 30 thousand people, the Jack Daniel's Festival in Chicago and a series of concerts in New York and California.

Paco invites you to the big anniversary concert that will take place on July 27 at the Foro del Obraje located at Calzada de la Presa #50. There will be many surprises for the public, so far it has been revealed that Benny Ibarra is the guest artist.
