Breakfast Route in San Miguel

Breakfast Route in San Miguel

If there’s one thing San Miguel has, it’s that it’s known as a multicultural city that is always ready to give anyone who wants it a lovely day with a delicious breakfast.

And so we have chosen from among many excellent spots to create this list, which you will no doubt appreciate for its delicious dishes.

We begin the perfect morning with a delicious medium-roast coffee from Veracruz at  at Zakalu (Plaza Conspiración, Salida a Querétaro #185)  where you can easily take a pause to appreciate the stillness that life offers us.

Breakfasts with a fresh personality and lots of flavor, like eggs Benedict and the mazalatte, are an everyday thing at this delicious place, where they also serve them with chlorophyll, a pigment from green leaves that helps with detoxification and digestion.

Located in Colonia Guadalupe, with the first rays of sunlight filtering through the trees, the aroma of sourdough bread coming out of the oven, and the sound of coffee beans, mornings begin at Kaffi (Carlos del Castillo #4D).

The venue is guided by a philosophy inspired by Fika, a concept that encourages taking a mindful pause during the day so people can slow down, look each other in the eye, enjoy nature, and savor slow, honest culinary processes.

By taking this calm breather in a life that can sometimes feel dizzying, the iconic marzipan conchitas in Talavera style are enjoyed even more, since this dish is a true work of art, hand-painted in their workshop and worthy of contemplation.

For the savory side, the seasonal Fika Bowl is highly recommended, with its sumptuous balance of freshness and technique. Its ingredients include a house-made hummus base, slow-roasted cherry tomatoes, aromatic fresh herbs, and two eggs cooked to the exact 7-minute point, accompanied by freshly baked pita bread.

With intention in each of their dishes, Once Once (Julián Carrillo #4B) combines Mexican flavors within a cozy space where they make sure the service is close and warm so that every diner feels completely at ease.

A great way to get to know this family is by ordering the chilaquiles panzones accompanied by their coffee made with a Veracruz blend from Sierra del Gallego, since they take pride in working primarily with Mexican ingredients here.

Other dishes you could order again and again are the huevos enmolados, the chilaquiles panzones, and their French toast, which have quickly become favorites in San Miguel.

Specializing in coffee, Lavanda Café (Loreto #48a) has been waking up our entire region for more than 13 years with its products, which are roasted in San Miguel.

To drink, the Flat White is an absolute must, as it features beans from producer Gerardo Vásquez of Nayarit, or a filtered coffee from the Meza Family of Chiapas, which they recommend pairing with a delicious pistachio roll, a piloncillo pig-shaped cookie, or the sweet bread baked there every day.

And for a heartier breakfast, there’s the cazuela, which comes with potatoes, mushrooms, cheese, and ranchera sauce, topped with a fried egg, bacon, and little tomatoes.

For palates that prefer the sweetest flavors, their French toast with berries and agave syrup is recommended, without forgetting to complement it with the coffee from their workshop called Obraje de café, which never ceases to amaze locals and visitors alike.

Continuing along the line of great coffee, Café Aldama (Aldama #57)  stands out from the rest for the extreme care and love they put into each of their dishes, always seeking that comforting homemade flavor without ever forgetting the detail and technique of a professional kitchen.

A dish that has been present since the origins of Café Aldama is the quesabirrias, which over time has become an indispensable part of its identity in San Miguel.

Now there are two new reasons to revisit one of the town’s favorites: their two new dishes, “Papa y salmón,” whose buttered potato base with smoked salmon, poached egg, and spring salad drives anyone crazy, and the croque madame, whose cheese sauce, turkey ham, and fried egg will soon become every diner’s favorite.

For egg lovers, there is Eggcellent (Antonio Plaza #7), with an egg menu literally featuring techniques and flavors with which you never imagined having eggs for breakfast, such as their Filipino eggs and the eggroll, which go completely beyond the traditional.

Another of their new offerings is the Pan Brioche Benedictino, a savory French toast that will leave more than one person amazed and delighted, and that will surely taste delicious complemented with their pistachio and hot coffee to warm the heart.

Without a doubt, a place with lots of style and heart, whose graphic identity as well as interior décor arrived in San Miguel to offer something different from what we were used to.

Being inside the courtyard of an old Mexican house is what gives Antaño (Ancha de San Antonio #4)  that magical atmosphere that seems like a dreamlike fantasy.

With pork shank tacos, eggs Benedict, and enchiladas suizas as its standout breakfast offerings, this is a place that never goes out of style in San Miguel thanks to its superb selection of local products.

For those days when you just want a good breakfast and to enjoy yourself, Antaño is the first place that comes to mind.

We saved the place that takes the biggest risks with its creations for last, because at Raíces (Salida a Celaya frente a la Gasolinera), they never stop surprising their diners.

A clear example is their original avocado agua fresca topped off with corn hot cakes with sweetened ricotta, complemented by their freshly made café de olla, all of which are ideal for kicking off a creative morning.

With deep respect for traditional Mexican food and reinterpreting it under their own signature style, Raíces earns the distinction of having the richest and most innovative proposal, also seen in their chilaquiles embarazados, a concept of crispy masa filled with juicy pressed chicharrón and bathed in their spectacular morita chile sauce, a combination that captivates everyone who tries it.
