LOCAL CONNECT # 21 Casa Luz the Home that illuminates San Miguel with its Creativity

Why build a nest of love when you can build a nest of light? And it is to this question that both Mariano and Steven have dedicated a good part of their lives, founding a site that would not be possible if it were not for their globetrotting lifestyle and their love for the rarest objects.

These premises were some of the foundations that gave life to House of Light an eclectic property in San Miguel that, more than just a place to spend a few days, seeks to generate a global community and implement a series of workshops that will undoubtedly illuminate the creativity of our lands with this great cultural exchange.

The project born out of love took more than a year to build from the ground up and is named in honor of Mariano's mother, as well as emphasizing the meaning of its name due to the many steps of luminescence within the property thanks to its multiple windows and clean architecture.

Minimalism and “less is more” were concepts that the creative couple sought to distance themselves from and instead emphasized another philosophy that fits well with the house and their lifestyle.

Taking the legacy of fashion icon Iris Apfel and her motto “More is more and less is a bore,” the boys were not afraid to decorate their home in an eclectic way and as a tribute to Mexican culture that is anything but shy.

Just looking at Luis Barragán's architecture with its explosion of colour and super dimensions that create a long-term impact is something that simulates what both Mariano and Steven decided to do; a sort of museographic experience.

A multi-sensory experience that was like a portal from the moment your eyes fell on the façade and opened the portentous wooden door. Entering a portal or a world suspended in time with elements that merge their travels through Asia in Hong Kong, in Europe in Spain and in Mexico in Saint Michael.

Although this house may appear “chaotic” to the untrained eye, nothing is accidental in the selection of its elements that seek to overstimulate all the elements:

The eyes will be delighted as they rest on the paintings and murals, our fingers will brush the carpets and blinds, we will smell many indistinct essences and aromatic candles and we will hear music from all latitudes as we enter this unexpected place with elements that people have never seen before.

And so this warm home opens its portals of vision starting with a workshop in May with a Spanish textile artist where he will teach a small group of people everything about his art in addition to being introduced to Mexican embroidery techniques as well as getting to know pieces such as the rebozo resulting in a different understanding of what was already being done from the implementation of different techniques in the first of many more workshops to come.

And the nice thing about having such charismatic hosts like Mariano and Steven is that they are always in a creative frenzy because while Mariano's vision can be disruptive and "terrifying" for Steven, it is when it lands with Steven's great logical capacity that the dreamlike takes space in the real world and turns out to be "the most beautiful thing I have ever seen" thus creating a tireless and complementary duo.
