The CATRINAS cross the pond

How satisfying it is when we can make a cultural exchange and at the same time honor our dead and this is exactly what is happening in the Seattle Catrina Festival which, as its name suggests, will take place in this beautiful location in the United States.

A group of Hispanics were the ones who had this great initiative wanting to bring this picturesque Mexican tradition to other borders, an event of which San Miguel is honored to be a part through our representative. Hermes Arroyo best known for being the life giver of the mojigangas.

A total of 10 catrinas were sent to Seattle, the result of three months of hard work. After having presented mojigangas in previous editions, Hermes now wanted to venture into the scene with its own proposal, alluding to traditional alfeñique sweets in its designs.

Don Juanito, La Chingona, El Patriota, La Colombiana, Chautle, María, La Llorona, Frida and El Chamuco are the names with which these beautiful works of art made of cardboard have been baptized. It should be noted that the skulls also have gigantic proportions, as is often the case in Hermes' work.

The use of colors in Hermes' creations and shapes in each of the pieces in "Seagiantskulls" never cease to surprise us with their colorfulness and playful figures. Such is the case of "El Chamuco" in which you can see gigantic horns that represent the playful devil. Another piece that will draw a lot of attention from Americans is the one that has the colors of the United States flag, making this piece a fusion between Mexican tradition and American patriotism.

All the pieces can be visited at Seattle Westlake Park for free and we also want to invite locals from that city to attend the Seattle Catrinas Festival that will feature a giant altar, Aztec dance, lottery, Frida and Pepe mojigangas and more than 200 catrinas. here your entries.

Imagine seeing an American city full of giant Catrinas and how symbolic and beautiful this represents for Mexicans, breaking down national boundaries and reminding us that we all have to die and that in death, we are all equal.
