GIFF Returns to San Miguel de Allende in 2026
Reaffirming its long-standing commitment to the local film industry, the Guanajuato International Film Festival (GIFF) returns to San Miguel de Allende with a program set to captivate film enthusiasts and a series of enriching masterclasses that promise to inspire audiences of all backgrounds.
One of the festival's highlights is today's Masterclass at 4:30 p.m. at the Rodolfo Fernández Theater at CC Instituto Allende, where acclaimed actress Marina de Tavira will reflect on her remarkable artistic career, her nuanced approach to acting, and her significant contributions to Mexican cinema.
As for the Official Selection, the festival, led by Sarah Hoch, once again joins forces with Cinemex Luciérnaga to showcase an exciting lineup of films. Among them is Everytime, a poignant family drama that explores tragedy and human connection, alongside the groundbreaking Dracula, in which director Radu Jude reimagines the timeless classic through the innovative use of artificial intelligence.
It comes as no surprise that GIFF continues to champion films that spark conversation. The festival was the first in Mexico to embrace artificial intelligence not as a threat to the creative industries, but as a powerful tool capable of expanding artistic possibilities and pushing the boundaries of cinematic storytelling.
The Mexican Short Film Selection, screening at the Teatro Santa Ana, also features compelling works such as Niño Pez, a moving story that explores the delicate bond between a pregnant mother and her eight-year-old son, capturing the fragility of family relationships with remarkable sensitivity.
Another standout title is Hyena, which follows a group of students preparing for a life-changing examination while trapped inside the walls of a castle during a violent storm, an atmosphere that only intensifies the mounting psychological tension.
For those drawn to more fantastical narratives, Sensai, directed by Valeria Díaz, tells the story of a nymph longing to reach the sky. Her journey leads her to a tailor's workshop, where she seeks to create a magical dress in a dreamlike process of transformation and self-discovery.
