For Denisse, there is no better tool than art and music to unite and bring people together, especially those who do not fit into the molds of contemporary society. That is why she founded GAMMA, a different space, with artistic proposals that challenge tradition to help those present expand their vision of the world.
At GAMMA, visual arts, performance, music, dance and a wide range of activities take place practically all week long; so you can go to a live painting class or a drag show on a Tuesday night; that and the good vibes radiated by its attendees is what we love about this space, which is also the only one of its kind in San Miguel de Allende.
The protagonist of LOCAL August 2021
We had the opportunity to exchange some ideas with Denisse, to learn more about her, GAMMA and the independent art scene in San Miguel, which Denisse seeks to provide and offer a safe space for its development. Read the interview here.
L: Do you have any artistic training or what are those drivers and passions that you live to the fullest?
DB: Yes! I studied Fine Arts here in San Miguel de Allende, at the Allende Institute in fact, and then I took several courses and classes with various private artists.
L: What did you find in SMA that you didn't find anywhere else? What makes our city special?
DB: At SMA I found diversity. Cultural diversity, diversity of thought, in general diversity was what kept me here and what keeps me here. That range of characters and personalities, of thoughts that exist here.
L: What motivated you to create Gamma as a space and platform for diverse artistic expressions?
DB: I do events, I've always done events. I love making space for misfits, the whole queer scene, hippies; all the local gang. My vision and my mission here at SMA has always been to take care of and protect the young gang, the locals and the new generations of artists as well as musicians. I'm really driven by making music, producing and painting, that's what motivates me to do everything I do in parallel.
L: Do you think there is a need for more spaces in SMA or Mexico dedicated to this great combination of art, entertainment and culture?
DB: There is definitely a need for more schools, more places for locals and youth, not just for tourists.
L: What is your concept of “destiny”? Do you think it is written or do we write it?
DB: We write our destiny with every decision we make, every second.
L: What would you say to someone who wants to start a business? What advice would you have liked to have received when you were doing it?
DB: They should follow their instincts, not give up, be persistent. And above all, discipline every day, so that everything flourishes. It is the only way to be able to get out of the ground, with water every day.
L: For all of you reading this, what are your most local recommendations for breakfast, lunch, shopping, drinks and dinner?
DB: For breakfast, Roots. To eat, Bastard. For dinner, Toast, The Restaurant. Gamma to drink and have a great time.
