ON THE COVER: ALEJANDRO TREJO Art as the compass for a full life

Who is Alejandro Trejo?

Artist and yoga teacher, lover of colors and the positive energy that is breathed in San Miguel, his hometown. Curious about life, that is how Alejandro is perceived from the moment we see what he shares on his Instagram: color, emotion, peace, joy.

There is something sublime about art that makes it a spiritual discipline, just like yoga. It is in the conjunction and complementarity of both practices that Alejandro finds the balance between what happens in his body, his mind and his spirit, in an unparalleled context such as that offered by SMA.

We all express what we think and feel in our own very particular way, and this enthusiastic explorer of every corner of Mexico does so through painting, with the vibrant colors that he captures in each work that ranges from a digital illustration to a huge and striking mural; while guiding those who want to embark on yoga and meditation.

The protagonist of LOCAL April 2021

With the arrival of spring, the streets of SMA shine even more than usual, and we couldn't think of a creative and creator who transmits that glow as authentically as Alejandro, so in a very organic way he became the face of our most recent edition of the guide. We had the opportunity to exchange a few words and ideas with him, where he told us what inspires him to continue creating from SMA.

“I love those people who smile at you from the heart, they are the people who give life to San Miguel de Allende.” –Alejandro Trejo.

L: For those who don't know you yet, how would you say Alejandro Trejo is in a few words?

AT: A human being who loves color, peace and harmony. I consider myself a calm person, a nature lover, in love with Mexico, its culture, its people and its traditions.

L: How would you describe your style and where does your passion for colours and for life come from?

AT: My passion for color comes from my love for my city, San Miguel de Allende; from the colorful facades, its streets, its flowers, its people… and also from the influence that the culture and colors of India have had on my life. My art style could be a mix between pop art and cubism, always inspired by Mexico and India.

L: SMA is a haven for creative people, what do you enjoy about living here that inspires you to keep creating?

AT: I love the colors of San Miguel, its festivals, traditions, atmosphere; this is something that inspires me to create, as well as its people, those people who smile at you from the heart and who give life to San Miguel.

L: You are also a certified yoga teacher! Tell us how you started your journey in this ancient spiritual practice and give us a little background on the type or technique of yoga you follow…

AT: My love for yoga was born in 2006. I started practicing here in San Miguel with several teachers. In 2010 I was certified as a yoga teacher by the SEP at the Devanand Yoga Cultural Center in Guadalajara, and I had the opportunity to take two other certifications in India in 2015 and 2017. The style of yoga I share is Vinyasa, Hatha and Gentle.

L: What advice do you give to people who want to start practicing yoga, meditation and leading a conscious lifestyle?

AT: Don't think twice and start practicing, but before you start, I recommend that you find out about the types of yoga that exist and which one is most recommended for you according to your health and lifestyle. There is a type of yoga that suits everyone's needs. And above all, I recommend meditation. Meditate for at least 5 minutes in the morning when you wake up and 5 minutes at night before going to sleep, listening to your breathing to calm your mind.

L: It is said that we all have the power to create and build our reality. How do you complement your art and your expertise in yoga to express your authentic creative force?

AT: Yoga, Hinduism and meditation have certainly had a strong influence on my art, as well as my love for my country and my city. Many of my works of art have been born from meditation or yoga practice. My art is nourished by these disciplines.
