STREET FOOD IS SOUL FOOD Our selection of street food in SMA

In Mexico you eat well

When Mexicans don't eat at home, they eat out and eat well. The hectic pace of routines and, of course, cravings, have created a culture of "on the go" food, fast, cheap and filling enough to keep us going for the rest of the day. Who hasn't eaten some stew tacos at some hidden stand in any corner of Mexico? It's in our DNA.

The fact that throughout Mexico, from the capital to the magical towns, there is food on the streets practically at all hours is something that surprises and amazes foreigners, especially Americans, whose dinner hour is almost our lunch hour. We dare say that Mexican gastronomy is perhaps the greatest intrinsic attraction for international tourism. Coming to Mexico means coming to eat well.

The flavors of San Miguel

With the history and traditions that San Miguel de Allende has had for centuries, it is only natural that the street food or traditional food offer is an institution. Fortunately, there is an audience for everything, and the same people who visit the trendy restaurant one day are eating quesadillas at the market the next. That versatility and support is what makes SMA a unique, diverse and exciting destination.

The Local SMA Guide staff asked us what are those corners, those traditional stalls that we knew because someone recommended them to us, because our parents took us there or because we arrived by coincidence and now we frequent them almost without realizing it. These are our recommendations!

Tuesday Market

The word “tianguis” comes from the Nahuatl tiyānquiztli, which literally means 'market'. They are the ephemeral establishments par excellence of pre-Hispanic Mesoamerica, and a tradition that is preserved to this day, and with an increasing offer of products and services. Here we all meet, tourists, expatriates and locals, to do our weekly shopping and take advantage of the opportunity to have some tacos de cecina and stop from stall to stall to try everything.

Tacos San Francisco

Whoever has come to San Miguel and has not had some tacos here after the bar or the party, did they really come to San Miguel? The most iconic tacos in the Center are well known by everyone, they even just appeared in a Eater's list, and although everyone has their favorites, the shepherd's ones are the standard ones.

Insurgent Tacos (Andy's)

Others are a must for everyone around here, and are also served (usually) by a great character known as El Andy. What should you order here? Some with head or ribs, or if you have more diverse tastes, some with tripa, but of course you can't leave without trying the classic pastor and some with steak; practically everything.

Don Ciro's Fatties

At the exit to Dolores you will find this establishment that feeds well and tasty all those who are passing through or heading to the city. Here you have to try the corn gorditas on the comal and their very spicy sauce, and also the quesadillas that you can accompany with beans from the pot. And don't forget the fresh and natural orange juice!

Brasimix Tacos

We love tacos so we're going to make a list of just them (wait for it!) but in the meantime, here are some of our other favorites on the way out to Celaya. What do we recommend here? Of course the al pastor ones, but the steak and rib ones meet the demands of taco lovers.

Market of Saint John of God

One of the most traditional markets because it is close to everything and is a place to visit for a flavored water, or even for breakfast or lunch. In addition to finding everything for the home, you can try the carnitas and sopes and huaraches that you will find in its aisles.

Ignacio Ramirez Market

A little further on the other side is this market where you can find everything from handicrafts to natural and organic products for personal care or cooking. To eat, there is the popular beef broth, some very famous tortas and there are some fondas like Las Rositas where they prepare enmoladas with mole poblano and beans. And for dessert, a good ice cream cone!

Tacos from La Güera

On Nemesio Diez Street you will find La Güera, because every city in Mexico has its own “güera” who is dedicated to feeding its inhabitants well and beautifully. The ones we like the most here are the shredded and rajas con queso, with their double tortilla that cannot be missed. Get there early because around 3 pm they run out of everything.

Location: Nemesio Diez, around the corner from the Allende Institute, very close to the Rosewood Hotel.

Garden Burgers

A must-try, these burgers have been present at our pre-parties and after-parties. Although it has moved around the corners, this long-standing stand has not left its legendary location in the Jardín Allende, accessible to everyone, tourists and locals visiting the centre. Nothing like a classic burger from a cart!
