CONGRATS, THE RESTAURANT! It's been 13 years since a San Miguel classic

The passage of time is different for a restaurant, because although its official birth occurs when it opens, its conception takes months or even years to go back to the first idea. So when many celebrate their first year, it feels like a lifetime, like an achievement that far from being fulfilled, encourages them to continue giving the best of themselves. Now, imagine talking about a 13th anniversary… 

This is what The Restaurant is going through, one of the most traditional and renowned places in the city, which is celebrating 13 years since it opened its doors in the beautiful colonial house at Sollano 16 in the heart of the Historic Center, with its majestic patio that many locals and visitors have fond memories of. What better proof of its legacy than celebrating thirteen years? 

Donnie Masterton, its creator, started in the kitchen at 15 and was a chef at Bice in Beverly Hills; The Hay Adams Hotel in DC; and finally at the world-famous Tavern on the Green in Manhattan. With a strong passion for music, and with the intention of taking a break from his culinary career, Donnie set out for Mexico with the idea of working as a producer and DJ. San Miguel de Allende was part of a path that radically transformed him: “it has been the culmination of my dream of living a simpler life,” says Donnie.

Throughout this time, The Restaurant –whose bird logo came from a drawing by one of Donnie’s daughters when she was five years old– has been the protagonist of many collaborations and specials, but one of its ideas positioned the concept of ‘comfort food’ in San Miguel: the Burger of the Week and the Burger Night that began in 2009. What is this idea about? Every seven days, Donnie presents a new burger that will be available during that week (His creativity has been admirable!), and every so often there is only one event talked about in the city: the Burger Night, an epic collaboration in which local chefs prepare their own version of a burger to surprise everyone. 

As part of Burger Night’s twelfth anniversary, Donnie has prepared an unprecedented happening, in which he will bring together the cream of the crop of local gastronomy to each participate with a burger proposal, with which you can experiment and mix to your liking: 12 years, 12 chefs, 12 burgers that will delight your palate. When? This Thursday, February 25th starting at 6 pm; it will be perhaps the most epic Burger Night we have ever seen and we can’t wait! And to celebrate The Restaurant’s 13 years, on Sunday the 28th they have prepared a special brunch starting at 12 pm with live performances, a complimentary cocktail by Casa Dragones and bottomless mimosas; it sounds like a celebration that no one will want to miss!
