The other cheek is not turned against intolerance coming against someone because of their gender ideology or sexual preference. It seems incredible that we still have to emphasize against these discriminatory behaviors in 2023, but sadly, we have not yet reached an evolution as a species that allows us to live with empathy and acceptance.
That is why, in order to generate change, we must do so through all the resources we have, and in our case, it is by writing a note with our feelings. What can we do to support a more inclusive world?
First of all, not staying silent in the face of inappropriate comments or “innocent” jokes is the way to go. If we disapprove of a behavior or conversation, it is our duty to make it known and show that we are not alone. Simply expressing our discontent does not ensure that the person making these judgments reflects, but it does reveal their latent homo, bi, inter or transphobia. Enough deplorable crimes have already been committed, largely due to remaining silent.
If you can, financially support the project of the person who may suffer discrimination, such as buying their art, their concert ticket, going to their café, donating to the foundation that defends human rights, donating to Casa Frida, which welcomes people from the community who are in a vulnerable situation due to their preferences or identities, such as being expelled from their home. A single peso makes a difference.
Educate your children so that from childhood society learns not to discriminate and that beyond that, it sees no reason to discriminate against others for their preferences. Absolutely everyone is different and children should be taught to have unconditional love and acceptance.
Just as children are capable of learning about respect and inclusion, older adults are also capable of learning about non-discrimination. It is never too early or too late to change your mindset to accept others and spread love.
Be open to uncomfortable moments and not just to what you have established as a normal precept. That way you will learn much more and exercise the respect that we all deserve.
And don't forget, become an ally to those who need it most. Sometimes a few words of comfort, a shoulder to lean on, or a good hug are all it takes to make this a world without discrimination.
