How to Rescue a Dog in San Miguel de Allende

By Pamela Fink

We were driving down the highway when a Husky with a rope tied around its neck ran out into the streets. My partner and I quickly caught up with him so he couldn't hurt himself and after protecting him from all danger the inevitable question arose: What do we do now?

Every day the number of homeless dogs increases in San Miguel and it is the proliferation of the Husky breed in particular that has caused their owners to abandon or lose them due to their strong concern about going outside, which is an extremely sad situation.

First of all, we urge people not to have this type of dog if they cannot meet its needs, which include regular exercise and canine sterilization to prevent uncontrolled reproduction and the free running of the streets for harmful purposes.

Falco, as we temporarily called him, was lucky but not so another Husky who sadly died after being hit by a car the night after Falco was rescued. Some sites have helped us look for his owners but unfortunately they weren't looking for him so we decided to find him a new family.

If this is a situation you are going through, these are some of the associations and people who can help you with such a noble rescue task.

First of all, we recommend printing flyers about the found dog with his photo and contact number to stick and distribute in crowded places such as cafes and restaurants. After that, we recommend going to the PETCO of San Miguel like the one next to the City Market to ask for help in dissemination. It is there that the foundation Lucky Dogs Club House holds weekly adoption events, although most of them seem to be puppies.

They can help you spread the word on their social networks as well as the foundation. I ❤️ Animals SMA whose mission is to help the puppies locate their owners or find adopters before they are put to sleep at Canine Control, a process that sadly occurs 10 days after receiving the puppy. We also recommend attending the Pet Vet from Calzada San Antonio in Stirling Dickinson to provide them with the medical attention they require.

Continuing with the diffusion, the group is on FB “Lost Dogs in San Miguel de Allende” who will certainly help by posting information about the rescued dog or the lost dog and will send it to various groups in the community.
Likewise, the networks of LocalGuide They were of great help to us in spreading the word and finding people interested in adopting Falco, and now some people have gone to meet him, so we are waiting for who might be the best option to give him a good home like the one all the dogs in the world should have.
